Nepotism in the workplace

Let us understand the exact meaning of nepotism

Hey peeps, nowadays, nepotism is the most popular term in Bollywood to debate on but Nepotism is everywhere, all other organizations as well. The term nepotism caught fire after the sudden and tragic demise of Sushant Singh Rajput.

Recently, Kangana’s detailed interview with a private television channel has dredged up a lot of muck and brought the issue of nepotism to the center stage. But whichever profession you look at, in every part of India or outside, nepotism is rampant.

Let us understand what the exact meaning of nepotism is-

Nepotism is favoritism granted to the family members in various fields, including entertainment, religion, business, politics, sports, etc. If you have a renowned surname, so you will get everything you want. It means knowledge, skills, hard work, character, are all irrelevant and this is the reason nepotism in the workplace is killing the people

Basically, India’s joint family system makes the nepotism worse but on the other hand, in a nuclear family, at least only his wife or child will be favoured, but in a long joint family, you have cousins, nephews, nieces, uncles, sons-in-law, and aunties get the chances without any talent.

Nepotism is somehow to a large extent, unavoidable in our community where your famous family name is all-important as it is helpful in getting direct entry into society, to jobs, to favours, to contracts, and everything else. Nepotism in the workplace is killing the people so we can say that nepotism is just the tip of the iceberg.

The biggest examples are the corporate world, Bollywood, and Politics. All of these full of children who are getting opportunities because of their parents. Many B-town celebrities also feel that it is unfair to outsiders who are genuinely talented and more deserving. While on the other side, there are some celebrities who admit that nepotism exists in Bollywood while there are some who deny the same.

Now just look at the way how political party tickets are distributed during a parliamentary election and you will realize that being connected with any renowned personality matters a lot. For instance, Gandhi’s family entrenched itself and started promoting its relatives. Many members of Parliament and various legislatures have a long legacy of nepotic allocating constituencies to their relatives over generations.

As we have already discussed, that nepotism is prevalent everywhere in our culture, be it in politics, business, or film, and further, it is going on even in religious circles, arts, industry, and other types of organizations.

These days the trend is that you will not be uplifted to success if you do not have powerful support, and you will be beaten down to failure. I am happy that more actors are coming out these days and speaking of their experiences and sharing their nepotism experiences.

I think if we are serious about making changes for the betterment, we should talk about this serious topic. We need a cultural evolution. Just think, where do our filmmakers, politicians, and businessmen come from? They are people just like everyone and they also grow up within the same culture. So every person should get a chance to show his talent and shine.

There have yet a lot of studies on nepotism. But some recent research shows the impact of nepotism on the performances of family-owned business and cooperation. The studies show that nepotism has resulted in bias in decision-making, unfair treatment, and losses to the company’s performances in the long term.

Nepotism ruins all of us, in every profession, at every socio-economic level — and nobody can refute that. Nepotism, Favoritism, and cronyism, all interfere with fairness because they give inappropriate advantages to someone without any talent or skill. We all can hope that like other major changes taking place in the country, this also becomes an issue that is strongly raised by all.

If this nepotism goes on like this in every sector, then corruption, discrimination, profiteering, unfair competition, suicide cases, and crime etc, in the country will keep increasing. Everyone has the right to get a fair chance in all professional fields and any possible hurdle in the way of achieving this right should be removed. It will only be possible when we prefer talent and qualification rather than emotion and relation. Definitely this step will take the country to new heights.
